Shopify Variant Publishing - Control What Each Channel Sees

Shopify variantų publikavimas - kontroliuokite, ką mato kiekvienas kanalas

Shopify just launched a feature many merchants have been waiting for - variant-level publishing per channel and catalog. You can now choose exactly which product variants are visible in each sales channel, without changing the product itself.

Until now, it was all or nothing: either a product with all its variants was published to a channel, or it wasn't. Hiding specific variants meant duplicating products or building workarounds. That's no longer necessary.

How variant publishing works

The concept is straightforward - each product variant now has its own publishing settings, independent from other variants of the same product.

Here's how it works in practice:

  1. Open a product in Shopify admin
  2. In the variants table, you'll see a "Publishing" column
  3. Click to toggle each variant on or off for each channel or catalog separately
  4. Save - changes take effect immediately

Need to update variant visibility across many products at once? The bulk editor supports that too.

When to use it

A few practical scenarios where this feature delivers immediate value:

  • B2B and wholesale - show bulk packages or pallets only in your B2B catalog, while retail customers see standard sizes
  • International commerce - different plug types, voltages, or measurement units for different markets. German customers don't need to see UK-type plugs
  • Seasonal or limited variants - prepare new variants ahead of time without publishing them until launch
  • Channel strategy - display certain colors or sizes only in your own store, not on marketplace channels

Important details

A few things to keep in mind:

  • The product must be active and published to a channel before its variants can appear there
  • If you unpublish all variants from a specific channel, the product itself will no longer display there
  • Unpublished variants don't appear in search results or collection filters on the storefront
  • Scheduled publishing for individual variants isn't available yet - only for entire products

API support

For developers: variant publishing via API will be available starting with the 2026-07 version. This means custom solutions and integrations will be able to manage variant visibility programmatically.

What to do now

If you have products with variants you didn't want showing up on certain channels - you can simply turn them off now. No more duplicate products, no more theme-level workarounds.

We especially recommend reviewing your B2B catalogs - variant publishing gives you precise control over what your wholesale and retail customers see, using the same products.
