Shopify Knowledge Base: How AI "Sees" Your Store and Why It Matters

Shopify Knowledge Base: kaip AI "mato" jūsų parduotuvę ir kodėl tai svarbu

Shoppers increasingly find products through AI - ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, the Shop app. They don't ask "where to buy?" - they ask "which store offers the fastest delivery?" or "does this store have a 30-day return policy?". AI answers them. The question is - what does AI say about your store?

Shopify responded with Knowledge Base - a free official app designed to control what information AI agents use when talking about your business.

What is Shopify Knowledge Base?

It's an official Shopify app, available on all plans at no cost. It does two things:

  • Shows metrics - how many times AI platforms asked about your store, which products are mentioned most, what types of questions are being asked
  • Lets you manage answers - you can review automatically generated facts about your business and add or edit FAQ answers

Importantly, these FAQs are not shown to customers on your storefront. They're a data source for AI systems - structured information that AI can quickly read and use when answering shoppers.

Why This Matters Right Now

AI search works differently from traditional Google search. Google crawls your pages. AI looks for structured, clear answers - and if it can't find them in your sources, it uses whatever it knows from elsewhere. That can mean inaccurate or outdated information about your store.

Knowledge Base lets you dictate the facts: your shipping terms, return window, whether you work with business clients, what makes you unique. Without these answers, AI guesses.

What to Include in Your FAQ

The best content is specific answers to questions shoppers actually ask. Recommended topics:

  • Shipping - timeframes, costs, regions (e.g. "We deliver within 1-3 business days across Lithuania")
  • Returns - conditions, window, process
  • Payments - which methods you accept, installment options
  • Products - what sets yours apart, warranties
  • Contact and support - how to reach you, opening hours
  • Business customers - whether you work with companies, VAT invoicing

Each answer should be short and factual. Not sales copy - facts. "Returns accepted within 30 days if the item is unused and in original packaging."

How to Get Started

Find the app in Shopify Admin - search for "Knowledge Base" or install it from the Shopify App Store. Once installed, you'll see:

  1. Automatically generated facts about your store (Shopify pulls these from your settings and catalog)
  2. Metrics - whether AI is already asking about your store
  3. An option to add your own FAQs - a good starting point is 5-10 of the most common questions

It takes 20-30 minutes to review existing facts and fill in what's missing. Set it up once, and it works continuously.

A Practical Tip

If your store serves both retail and business customers - make sure to say so in your FAQ. AI frequently gets asked "does this store accept B2B orders?" and if there's no answer, potential business clients may never reach your page.

Knowledge Base is a quick, free tool that will become increasingly important over the next few years - as AI assistants become the primary product discovery channel. Worth setting up now, before your competitors do.
