Shopify Agentic Plan and UCP - a new sales channel you don't build

Shopify Agentic Plan ir UCP - naujas pardavimo kanalas, kurio jūs nekuriate

In just a few months, Shopify turned AI sales channels from an experiment into infrastructure. First came Agentic Storefronts - a feature that surfaces your products in ChatGPT and Google AI conversations. Now Shopify goes further: the new Agentic Plan and the open Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) mean that AI is becoming a standard sales channel - just like Google Shopping or social media.

And here's the key part - you don't even need a Shopify store anymore.

What is the Agentic Plan?

Until now, Agentic Storefronts only worked for existing Shopify merchants. The Agentic Plan changes that - now any brand can join Shopify Catalog and sell through AI channels, even if their main store runs on a different platform.

How it works in practice:

  1. Sign up for the Agentic Plan (currently via waitlist)
  2. Upload your products to Shopify Catalog
  3. Shopify automatically syndicates your products to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and other AI channels
  4. Shoppers see your product in an AI conversation and complete the purchase through Shopify checkout

The plan has no monthly fee - you only pay the standard Shopify Payments commission on sales.

Universal Commerce Protocol - an open standard

Alongside the Agentic Plan, Shopify and Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) - an open standard that defines how AI agents communicate with stores. This isn't a Shopify-only solution - it's an industry standard already backed by Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, and over 20 partners.

UCP standardizes the entire purchase journey - from product discovery to order management - through a single interface. This means AI agents no longer need separate integrations with each platform. One protocol, every store.

The protocol is open source (Apache 2.0 license) and works with multiple technologies - REST, Model Context Protocol, Agent2Agent, and others.

The numbers speak for themselves

According to Shopify, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has grown 8 times year over year since January 2025. Orders from AI-powered search have increased 15 times. Shopify Catalog now covers billions of products, automatically categorized and optimized by specialized LLM models.

These numbers mean one thing: AI channels are no longer a niche opportunity. This is a sales channel you can't afford to ignore.

What should merchants do now?

Agentic Storefronts are currently live in the US market, but UCP is a global standard and expansion is a Shopify priority. That means the time to prepare is now:

  • Product data quality - AI agents select products based on structured data, not keyword stuffing. Accurate titles, categories, and descriptions are essential.
  • Catalog readiness - if you sell internationally, make sure your English product versions are complete and up to date.
  • Watch for Agentic Plan availability - track when the plan opens in your region. Early adopters will have a clear advantage.
AI sales channels are no longer a future vision - they're infrastructure that's already generating sales. The question isn't if, but when your products will be there.
