The Shopify admin looks different: what changed and where to find things now

The new look of the Shopify admin interface

If you opened the Shopify admin this week and something looked off - nothing is broken. On September 15 Shopify started rolling out a refreshed admin design, and it reaches stores gradually.

That means you and a colleague may be looking at different interfaces at the same time. There is nothing to enable or confirm - the update arrives on its own.

What changed

The change is purely visual: a new colour palette, typography, spacing and icons. All of it sits inside a new "frame" - Shopify's term for the reworked window structure.

Three things are most noticeable in daily use:

  • Search, notifications and the store switcher moved from the top bar into the left side navigation. The menu can be collapsed, so there is more room on screen for actual work.
  • Sidekick is no longer a side panel - it is now a floating chat widget at the bottom of the page, reachable without interrupting what you are doing.
  • Overall density changed: elements are laid out differently, which is why the first impression is that everything has shifted.

Why Sidekick moved

Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant built into the admin - you can ask it about your store data or have it perform an action without navigating through menus. It used to open in a side panel and take up part of the screen, so many people simply never opened it.

Now it sits at the bottom as a small widget, always visible. A small change, but the logic is clear: Shopify wants the assistant within reach during everyday work, rather than a separate tool you have to remember to open.

What did not change

Almost everything that matters. The functionality is the same: same menu items, same actions, same data. Shopify states plainly that only the appearance and layout of the admin are changing.

Nothing on the customer side changed either. Your theme, checkout, product pages and store speed have nothing to do with this update - it is the admin interface only.

The same goes for integrations. Accounting software, warehouse systems, import and export tools talk to Shopify through the API, and the API is untouched by this update. Whatever was connected stays connected.

If something in your store stopped working at the same time, the cause is elsewhere - the new admin design is not to blame.

Why some apps still look old

This is the detail that raises the most questions. Apps built with Shopify's interface components get the new styling automatically. Apps with their own interface keep the old design until their developers decide to update.

So for a while your admin will be a mix: Shopify pages look new, some app screens look exactly as before. That is normal and does not mean the app is broken. Shopify chose this deliberately so that nobody sees a half-updated app.

If a custom app or admin extension was built for your store, it is worth asking your developer whether they plan to move to the new components. There is no rush - the old styling keeps working.

What to do now

  1. Warn your team. If several people run the store, tell them the design is changing. Otherwise you will get questions about why everything disappeared.
  2. Update your internal docs. If you keep a document with screenshots showing how to fulfil an order or add a product, it is now out of date. Good moment to review it.
  3. Do not rush to change habits. Collapse the side menu, see where search ended up, and within a few days it will feel normal.
  4. Got custom work - ask your developer. That is the only case where action may be needed on your side.

The timing is not accidental

September is the last quiet month before peak season. Black Friday and Christmas are close, and that is when the speed of processing orders in the admin has a real cost.

If you have warehouse or customer service staff, half an hour now pays off: walk through the main tasks in the new interface together while order volume is still normal. Learning new navigation in October or November is the worst possible timing.

Worth knowing

Because the rollout is gradual, the new design may not have reached you yet. If colleagues already see the new interface and you do not, you just have to wait. Shopify makes no mention of an option to go back to the old version.

This update also shows a direction: Shopify is moving the Sidekick AI assistant closer to everyday work, and the side menu is becoming the main navigation hub. It gives a reasonable idea of where the interface is heading next.
